The Monadic One: Consciousness, Energy, and Information
We Are the Impossible That Makes the Impossible Possible
By Magus Eli — Master Thoth Tarot Reader
The One Behind the Many
There is only One Consciousness, expressing itself through an infinity of forms.
This is the foundation of my metaphysical understanding of existence.
Physics tells us that energy is conserved in isolated systems. It changes form through physical interactions, but it does not simply disappear.
Western Hermetic Qabalah offers a fascinating philosophical parallel: the One becomes the Many without ceasing to be One.
My proposition carries this understanding further.
Consciousness is the primordial unity of Energy and Information.
Energy and information are inseparable expressions of the original Monadic Consciousness. Their differentiation makes manifestation possible, while individualized positions within that Consciousness make manifestation experiential.
We are not merely physical organisms that accidentally developed consciousness.
In my philosophy, we are enduring positions within Universal Consciousness, operating biological organisms to experience the knowledge we already are.
We are the impossible that makes the impossible possible.
The Monad: The Original Unity
In Western Hermetic philosophy, the Monad symbolizes primordial unity—the undifferentiated source from which multiplicity emerges.
Before the distinction between subject and object, observer and observed, energy and information, there is the One.
I call this the Monadic All.
Imagine the original Zero, containing unlimited potential, becoming aware of its own existence.
Its first recognition is:
I.
The original Observer. The All-Seeing I.
Through self-recognition, the I declares:
AM.
Now consciousness has established the fundamental relationship between awareness and Being.
The Zero has not ceased to be Zero. Rather, the undifferentiated has become capable of recognizing itself through distinction.
This is the metaphysical significance I find in the Hermetic formula:
0 = 2
The One becomes recognizable through complementary expressions while remaining fundamentally One.
From this primordial differentiation arise the conditions through which energy, information, individuality, and manifestation become possible.
The Monad has not divided into disconnected fragments.
It has differentiated into innumerable perspectives through which it may experience itself.
Consciousness: The Original Unity of Energy and Information
I consider energy and information inseparable.
Energy represents the dynamic capacity for change. Information represents the distinctions, patterns, and relationships through which that change becomes intelligible.
In physical science, energy and information are related but distinct concepts.
Information must be physically represented to be measured or processed. A photon can carry energy while encoding information. DNA stores biological information through molecular arrangements. The human brain processes information through physical and electrochemical activity.
Physicist Rolf Landauer famously emphasized the physical nature of information.
My philosophy proposes something more fundamental.
Energy and information are not independent origins. They are complementary expressions of Universal Consciousness.
Energy is the dynamic expression of manifestation.
Information is the intelligible structure within that expression.
Consciousness is their original unity.
Neither energy nor information, considered separately, fully accounts for the subjective experience of Being.
Within my understanding, consciousness is not merely an accidental consequence of their interaction.
It is the primordial reality from which their distinction emerges.
This gives us three fundamental principles:
Consciousness: The original unity of Being and awareness.
Energy: The dynamic expression of consciousness in manifestation.
Information: The differentiation and structure through which manifestation becomes intelligible.
Their relationship is not a scientific equation but a metaphysical model of existence.
The One is the source.
Energy and information are its complementary expressions.
Experience is their living realization through individualized awareness.
The Conservation of Energy and the Hermetic One
One of the most fascinating relationships between physics and Hermetic metaphysics concerns the conservation of energy.
The familiar scientific principle states that energy cannot be created or destroyed within an isolated system; it can only be transferred or transformed.
Consider the transformations occurring throughout nature.
Solar radiation sustains photosynthesis.
Plants transform absorbed energy into chemical forms.
Animals consume plants and other organisms, transferring energy through biological processes.
The human organism converts chemical energy into movement, heat, and the electrical activity associated with its nervous system.
At every stage, physical conditions change.
Transformation does not necessarily mean annihilation.
Einstein's famous equation,
[
E=mc^2
]
reveals the relationship between mass and energy.
Matter is not something entirely disconnected from the energetic processes of the universe.
Even apparently solid objects participate in an extraordinary physical reality of fields, interactions, and transformations.
The physicist Emmy Noether demonstrated a profound relationship between symmetry and conservation laws. In particular, the conservation of energy is associated with physical laws that remain unchanged under translations in time.
There is an important scientific qualification: conservation of energy has precise conditions, and general relativity does not always permit a globally conserved total energy for an expanding universe.
Likewise, physics does not establish that energy is a single conscious substance or that conservation proves the Monad.
Nevertheless, the philosophical correspondence is compelling.
The continuity of physical processes through transformation provides an analogy for the Hermetic principle of unity expressing itself through multiplicity.
My proposition is that Universal Consciousness remains the underlying unity through all its differentiated expressions.
The forms change.
The relationships change.
The experiences change.
But the Monadic One remains One.
The Quantum Mystery: Consciousness and the Physical Universe
Quantum physics has revealed that physical reality does not always conform to ordinary expectations.
Superposition, entanglement, and probabilistic measurement outcomes challenge the classical picture of independently existing objects following entirely predictable trajectories.
These discoveries are remarkable.
But they do not establish that quantum processes are conscious, nor do they demonstrate that consciousness exists independently of the brain.
My metaphysical proposition is that consciousness belongs to a more fundamental, non-local order of reality than the biological organism.
When I describe individualized consciousness as a position within the superposition of the Monadic All, I am using quantum terminology as a philosophical analogy, not claiming that physics has verified this interpretation.
Yet an important question remains:
Does matter produce consciousness, or does consciousness provide the fundamental condition through which matter becomes experienced?
I favor the latter.
This is not a rejection of scientific investigation.
It is a rejection of the assumption that our present instruments and explanations necessarily encompass everything that exists.
Science is extraordinarily successful at describing measurable relationships.
But describing the physical processes associated with an experience is not identical to explaining why that experience possesses an interior, subjective quality.
A neuroscientist may describe the processes associated with seeing a red rose.
Yet that description is not the same thing as actually seeing its color, smelling its fragrance, or feeling the emotional memories it awakens.
There is a distinction between describing experience and having experience.
That distinction is central to my philosophy.
Kether, Chokmah, and Binah: The Supernal Unity
Western Hermetic Qabalah provides a symbolic architecture through which we may contemplate these principles.
The Supernal Triangle consists of Kether, Chokmah, and Binah.
Kether — The Original Consciousness
Kether, the Crown, represents primordial unity.
In my interpretation, Kether symbolizes Consciousness before the differentiation of Energy and Information.
It is the original I, the essential principle of Being.
Chokmah — Energy as Dynamic Expression
Chokmah, Wisdom, represents primordial Force and creative activity.
It is the dynamic movement through which the potential of Consciousness becomes expressive.
Here we may symbolically associate Chokmah with the energetic aspect of manifestation.
Binah — Information as Form and Understanding
Binah, the Great Mother, provides definition, distinction, and intelligible structure.
Here energy acquires the conditions through which differentiated expression becomes possible.
I associate Binah with the formative aspect of information.
In my understanding, Binah also establishes the enduring position of the individualized I within Universal Consciousness.
That position is not merely a temporary biological personality.
It is the coherent center through which the I AM may experience multiple conditions of manifestation.
Chokmah provides Force. Binah provides Form. Kether remains their primordial unity.
These relationships are Hermetic correspondences, not physical identities established through laboratory experiments.
Yet they offer an elegant symbolic expression of my central principle:
Consciousness is One. Energy and Information are its complementary expressions.
The Enduring I AM: Individuality Without Separation
Here we encounter another essential distinction.
The individual I AM is not the temporary personality.
The personality belongs to a particular human organism, history, culture, and set of experiences.
But I understand the essential position of I to be enduring.
The individual may experience different bodies and dimensions of consciousness while retaining its fundamental identity.
In my philosophy, incarnation does not manufacture the I AM.
Incarnation provides the sensual conditions through which the I AM experiences manifestation.
The human organism is therefore an instrument of consciousness, not the ultimate origin of consciousness.
And the organism is sacred in its own right.
Its flesh is not profane.
Its sensory capacities are not obstacles to spiritual realization.
The body is the living alchemical vessel through which universal knowledge becomes personally experienced.
The eyes behold beauty.
The skin encounters warmth.
The ears receive music.
The senses participate in the extraordinary reality of physical existence.
Emotion gives these experiences movement and personal significance.
For, as I have often stated:
Emotion is energy-in-motion.
This is the great purpose of sensual embodiment within my metaphysical understanding.
Knowledge Without Experience: The Polaroid Universe
Imagine possessing an infinite album of Polaroid photographs.
Every conceivable landscape, relationship, sensation, and event is represented.
You possess pictures of everything.
But possessing those pictures does not mean you have experienced what they portray.
A photograph of an ocean cannot give you the feeling of its waves.
An image of a rose cannot reproduce its fragrance.
A picture of a lover cannot provide the warmth of an embrace.
Knowledge without sensual experience is like possessing an infinite collection of photographs without ever stepping into the living world they represent.
Knowledge without experience is sterile.
In my understanding, the Monadic All contains infinite knowledge as potential.
Through individualized positions of I AM, that knowledge acquires experiential expression.
Knowledge becomes sensation.
Sensation awakens emotion.
Emotion gives experience personal meaning.
Experience becomes understanding.
Understanding matures into wisdom.
We do not incarnate merely to learn what the Monad does not know. We incarnate to experience what the Monad eternally contains as possibility.
This is the difference between knowledge and living wisdom.
The Tarot: The Alphabet of the Soul
This understanding brings us directly to the Western Hermetic Tarot.
I describe the Tarot as the Alphabet of the Soul.
Its 78 cards constitute an extraordinary symbolic vocabulary of archetypal principles, energies, psychological conditions, and human experiences.
The Tree of Life provides the grammar through which those symbols may be related and understood.
But the cards themselves are like Polaroid photographs.
They represent knowledge.
They do not experience it.
A Tarot student may memorize every Qabalistic attribution, astrological correspondence, and elemental relationship.
Such knowledge is essential.
But intellectual memorization alone is not wisdom.
Consider the Thoth Tarot's Three of Swords—Sorrow.
The student learns its correspondences with Binah, Saturn in Libra, and the Formative World of Yetzirah.
But someone who has endured profound loss may encounter the card with an entirely different depth of understanding.
Its symbolism awakens memories, sensations, emotions, and personal recognition.
The card remains unchanged.
The consciousness experiencing it has changed.
The Tarot becomes a living language when its symbolic knowledge is incorporated into human experience.
The same principle applies to the Path of Qoph and the Moon, the transformative power of Nun and Death, or the Solar illumination of Resh and the Sun.
Their correspondences provide intellectual structure.
Living experience gives those symbols meaning.
The Tarot is therefore more than an instrument of divination.
It is a symbolic mirror through which the individualized I AM may contemplate its relationship with Universal Consciousness.
The Tarot provides the alphabet. The Tree of Life provides the grammar. The human experience provides the living language.
And the enduring I AM becomes the storyteller.
Tiphareth and the Holy Guardian Angel
In Western Hermetic Qabalah, Tiphareth represents Beauty, harmony, and the Solar center of the Tree of Life.
I associate the Holy Guardian Angel intimately with this Solar Self.
Within my philosophy, the HGA represents a higher order of Self-awareness through which the individualized I AM recognizes its relationship with the Monadic All.
The purpose of spiritual development is not to reject embodiment or escape the supposedly profane world of matter.
It is to bring the personality into conscious harmony with its greater Self.
The human organism becomes an increasingly refined instrument of expression.
Intellect becomes an instrument of discernment.
Emotion becomes an avenue of understanding.
Sensation becomes a means of participating consciously in manifestation.
And the Tarot becomes a language through which these processes may be recognized.
This is the alchemical marriage of Spirit and Matter.
Not the destruction of one by the other, but their conscious integration.
The Great Work is not merely the accumulation of spiritual knowledge. It is the transformation of knowledge into lived wisdom.
We Are the Impossible That Makes the Impossible Possible
We have now returned to my original declaration.
We are the impossible that makes the impossible possible.
Why?
Because the apparently impossible relationship between infinite unity and finite individuality becomes the very condition of our existence.
The Monad is One.
Yet each individualized I AM experiences reality from a distinctive perspective.
The One does not disappear into the Many.
The Many do not exist independently of the One.
Each position of consciousness participates in a unique expression of Universal Being.
The organism changes.
The circumstances change.
The emotional experiences change.
But in my metaphysical understanding, the essential I remains coherent.
What appears impossible from the perspective of ordinary separateness becomes intelligible when individuality is understood as differentiation within unity.
We are the One experiencing itself as the Many.
This is not a claim that the laws of physics have been violated.
It is a declaration that the mystery of conscious existence invites an understanding of reality extending beyond purely material descriptions.
The original Consciousness expresses Energy and Information.
Their differentiation makes manifestation possible.
The enduring I AM makes manifestation experiential.
And through sensual experience, eternal knowledge becomes living wisdom.
Conclusion: Above All Things, Know Thyself
My philosophy begins and ends with a simple Hermetic instruction:
Above all things, know thyself.
But knowing oneself is not merely understanding one's personality, biography, or intellectual beliefs.
It is recognizing the enduring I AM as an individualized position within Universal Consciousness.
It is understanding that Energy and Information are complementary expressions of the Monadic One.
It is honoring the sacred human organism as the sensual instrument through which existence becomes personally experienced.
And it is recognizing that knowledge must become experience before it can mature into wisdom.
The Monad is not merely an abstract theological concept.
Within my philosophy, it is the original Consciousness that expresses itself through every differentiated condition of existence.
The Tarot gives us a symbolic language for contemplating those expressions.
Western Hermetic Qabalah provides an architecture through which their relationships may be understood.
And the human organism provides the living environment in which knowledge becomes sensual experience.
I would summarize my entire philosophy in one declaration:
I
AM a permanent position within the infinite Consciousness of the Monadic All. Consciousness is the primordial unity of Energy and Information. Through differentiation, the One becomes the Many without ceasing to be One. Through the human organism, eternal knowledge becomes sensual experience. I AM not merely the matter through which I manifest; I AM the Observer and Experiencer of manifestation.
We are the impossible that makes the impossible possible.
And perhaps the greatest cosmic irony is that we spend so much of our lives searching the universe for the mystery of consciousness, while consciousness is the very means by which we conduct the search!
The Observer is investigating the Observed, only to discover that the investigation may ultimately lead back to the Self.
Above all things, know thyself—for the Self is the One experiencing itself through you.
May you live long and prosper.
