Emotion: The Will to Force in Motion

“All motion is caused by will, and all will is directed by emotion.”—Hermetic Aphorism

Emotion is often misunderstood as merely a reaction to the world. But for the practitioner of Hermetic Magick, the Qabalist, and the Tarot Adept, emotion is energy-in-motionthe kinetic force that empowers thought and births reality. It is not passive. It is not arbitrary. It is the Will-to-Force in vibrant expression.

Let us unpack this deeper through the lens of the Tree of Life, the Tarot, and the sacred mechanisms of astral dynamics.

🔺 The Supernal Triad: The Three Modes of Will

In Western Qabalah, the Supernal Triad—Kether, Chokmah, and Binah—describes the primary mechanics of divine Will:

  • Kether: “I Will Be” — The pure potential of Being.

  • Chokmah: “Will to Force” — The electric, projective thrust of desire and motion.

  • Binah: “Will to Form” — The magnetic, shaping womb of structure and comprehension.

Emotion flows from this dynamic interplay. It is Chokmah’s spark sent into Binah’s vessel. Emotion is the Force that gives shape to the Form through the fusion of thought and will.

🜃 Emotion as the Astral Current

In the Four Worlds model (Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, Assiah), we find that emotion belongs to Yetzirah, the world of formation, ruled by the element of Air and the Sephirothic realm of the psyche. But it does not merely reside there—it moves through Yetzirah like a living current.

  • Thought arises from the Neshamah and Ruach.

  • But thought alone is static—a glyph on a page, a symbol without sound.

  • When infused with emotion, thought is set in motion, animated in the astral realm and thus capable of influencing the etheric.

Emotion is the astral engine. It is the field generator by which thought becomes impactful, magnetic, and radiant.

🜂 Thought + Emotion = Will to Manifest

Let’s define this equation Hermetically:

Thought + Emotion = Directed Will
Directed Will + Action = Manifestation

Emotion is the force-carrier—the astral fuel that transforms a passive concept into an active creation. In ceremonial magick, this is why cold ritual is ineffective, while a charged rite filled with emotional vitality is potent and transformative.

Emotion is the Sword and the Wand, depending on how it is directed.

  • A Wand when projective and passionate (Lust, Chariot).

  • A Sword when discriminating and focused (Adjustment, Two of Swords).

  • A Cup when receptive and devoted (The Star, Ace of Cups).

It is always in motion—it cannot be still—because its purpose is to move Will through space and time.

🔥 Emotion as Will to Force: Tarot Correlations

Let us now look at some Thoth Tarot cards that reflect this dynamic nature of emotion as Will-to-Force:

Lust (ATU XI)

Here emotion is not chaotic, but ecstatic. Babalon rides the Beast, directing passion through the Grail. The blood of the Saints—sacrificed egoic illusions—fills the Cup. Lust is emotive Will at its highest potency: Solar, ecstatic, and fearless.

The Chariot (ATU VII)

Emotion becomes the vehicle of sacred Will. The charioteer is enclosed in armor (Will) but led by sphinxes—emotive paradoxes that must be harmonized. This is Will carried by focused passion, a spiritualized direction of force.

Ace of Wands

Pure eruptive force. The Ace of Wands is Chokmah in the world of Assiah—raw Will poised to move through emotion, spirit, and action. It is the Will-to-Force in seed form.

🜁 The Alchemical Mechanism: From Idea to Embodiment

  1. Inspiration (Atziluth) — A divine spark, often from Kether or Chokmah.

  2. Conception (Briah) — The idea is mentally modeled, the image formed.

  3. Emotion (Yetzirah) — The idea is felt, given fire and movement.

  4. Action (Assiah) — The emotional current flows outward into motion, event, or manifestation.

Emotion is the bridge between spirit and matter. It moves the idea across worlds.

🜄 Practical Application: Why Emotion is Essential in Ritual

In ritual and magical workings, the formula of "enflame thyself with prayer" is not poetic—it is mechanical. Without emotion, the symbols of ritual remain inert. With emotion, they become astral sigils, fiery vectors, charged by the Solar Will of the operator.

  • Invocations without emotion = empty sound

  • Rituals without emotion = hollow forms

  • Will without emotion = disconnected intent

The adept must emote with clarity, not just feel randomly, but direct the feeling toward the objective—thus aligning the astral current with the blueprint of the Will.

✶ Final Reflection: You Are the Flame That Moves It All

Emotion is not weakness—it is the divine current. It is the living breath of Will, the invisible thunder that cracks the void and echoes into form. In understanding that emotion is energy-in-motion, the magician reclaims a sacred tool not as something to suppress or override, but to wield as the very Fire of Becoming.

As it is written:

"I am the Will. I am the Way. I am the Flame that moves the Day."

Emotion will sigil

Grimoire Page:

Title: Emotion as Will to Force – A Ritual of Solar Alignment

Sigil: See attached image – A spiral radiating from the center, symbolizing the motion of Will through the astral.

Thoth Tarot Cards:

  • Lust (ATU XI) – Emotion purified and exalted through ecstasy and divine intoxication.

  • The Chariot (ATU VII) – Will steered by mastery over the sphinxes of dual emotion.

  • Ace of Wands – The pure seed of Chokmah as eruptive Will into Form.

Ritual Purpose: To ignite the astral body with directed emotion, aligning the lower and higher self through emotive Will, so the aspirant may consciously create reality.

Ritual Structure:

  1. Preparation

    • Stand or sit before your altar.

    • Light a red or gold candle (symbolizing Solar Fire).

    • Place the sigil of Emotion-Will above or in front of you.

    • Set the three Thoth cards in triangle: Lust (top), Chariot (right), Ace of Wands (left).

  2. Breath of Will

    • Inhale deeply, visualizing your inner fire rising from the base of the spine.

    • With each exhale, feel it radiate outward into your aura.

    • Do this until your body vibrates subtly with energy.

  3. Invocation of Emotional Will

    • Speak aloud, firmly:

"By the Flame of Lust, I burn away illusion.
By the Wheels of the Chariot, I steer my storm.
By the Wand of Fire, I plant my Will in Form.
Emotion, be my servant — move as I move.
I am the Flame. I am the Force. I am the Will that moves the world."

  4. Charging the Sigil

    • Stare into the sigil and send the emotion of your current desire into it—fully feel the result as if already achieved.

    • Imagine the spiral glowing with golden red fire.

  5. Sealing the Current

    • Clap once or say, "It is done."

    • Blow out the candle or leave it to burn completely.

    • Ground yourself with breath and water.

Hermetic Notes: This rite aligns the astral field to the Supernal Will of Chokmah and the vehicle of the soul through Yetziratic Fire. Emotion is not reaction—it is directive. This ritual spiritualizes emotion into a precise instrument of Magick.

Use this ritual to:

  • Power manifestations

  • Embody purpose

  • Channel passion into creation

  • Burn away astral debris through sacred fire

"The stars are moved by Love, and the planets by Will; so too shall I move, as a Living Flame."
